"One Port City" by JIVE, National PR & The Halifax Port Authority

This week, after almost a year of planning, scheduling, shooting and producing, we are ecstatic to share the work JIVE has done in collaboration with National PR for the Halifax Port Authority. With National PR’s creative concept, “One Port City”, we were tasked to demonstrate the deep intertwinement between the city and its port. The Port has been, and continues to be, the heart of Halifax, and so we set out to show the Port Authority in all its glory, while also capturing imagery and footage that showed the unique and deep integration between the Port and city.

This was no small feat. The scouting for a job like this was extensive. We explored every perspective and angle to ensure that our shot list could be accomplished in the most efficient way possible, and even then, we had to account for the container ship schedules (which, we discovered, can be erratic at best!). Pair this variable with wanting perfect weather and outdoor lighting conditions and it became clear that flexibility was going to be our best friend for this project. With that flexible mindset, and the incredible planning work done by National PR we were able to tackle these obstacles head on and pivot at a moments notice, producing a body of work we are all incredibly proud of.

There were moments on this shoot that I stood in awe of our city. The harbour that embraces Halifax is massive, so much bigger than I thought, and on days when the sun shone down on it, glistening through every sight line in the city, I knew I was growing a deeper appreciation for this “One Port City”. We hope this work does that for you as well.

Thank you to National PR for including us on this journey. It was incredible to work with such a creative, organized and wonderful team.

Clients questions answered: Is there certain gear your photographer should have?

Technology and its abilities come in all shapes and forms, which can make it difficult to decipher who has the best, and does it make them the best?

The answer isn’t so black and white.

First, we’d like to preface that if a photographer shows up with only an iPhone and some garage lights, that might be cause for concern. However, for the most part what a photographer brings to a shoot can vary, which is normal, as long as they’re the correct tools for the specific job.

As a company with years of experience we have a system that allows us to ensure we come properly prepared to each and every shoot. Prior to shoot day we assess the ask, and start building a gear list that is appropriate for the project at hand. In other words we make sure we aren’t bringing a knife to a gun fight.

This gear list is based off of the answers to multiple questions we have already brought to the client ie. What type of shots are required? What are the output specifications? Do you have reference shots? Etc.

Knowing these answers to these questions help us understand what is needed from a gear standpoint. If your photographer hasn’t fielded these questions with you - that might be a red flag. Don’t be afraid to ask them what they intend on bringing on the day if this is the case.

Finally, it’s worth mentioning that while it isn’t always advertised, a big part of what we do is making sure we are up to date with the gear and technology we use. Constantly tracking upgrades and new tech means we continue to improve the quality of images and videos we produce for our client. Which is always the goal.

JIVE PODCAST: "Make My Logo Bigger: with special guest Sam Archibald"

Wow. Another episode of Make My Logo Bigger Podcast in the books. While I knew this new venture would be enlightening, I don’t know if I was ready for how much I would learn from each guest.

For this episode we had the honour of sitting down with Shortstop agency owner, Sam Archibald. I’ve known and worked with Sam for many years, but to sit and talk with intention about his journey was a real gift. The humility and intelligence he presents himself with is noteworthy, and he serves to remind us of the importance of humanity and connection in this industry.
